My Side of the Fence

The danger isn't going too far. It's that we don't go far enough.

FIOS

My family, after having been DirecTV customers for about 13 years, has switched to FIOS.  This was driven by the lousy HD-DVR that DirecTV had – the software was buggy and changing channels was slow.  It also required rebooting with some regularity.  I’m a computer guy so rebooting is good with me but cable boxes should have better software.  The old standard definition DirecTV boxes worked much better.  The channel changing bit might have been due to the increased bandwidth requirements for HD but it’s hard to tell.

In any event, the installation took an entire day.  The fibre has replaced our DSL and the copper voice lines.  The TV comes in over the same fibre line.  The amount of bandwidth is just incredible – the internet smokes.  The quality of the TV signal is really good and the City channels look quite good.  The Verizon staff were very friendly and left no mess behind.

Overall, I’m very happy so far.  My only nit would be that the FIOS equipment is an example of how not to do design – the remote has so many ridiculous lights on it that my 6 year old nephew probably designed it but it all seems to work well enough…

Do you mind providing the cost of service? We have verizon DSL, and Verizon will be in the neighborhood soon. I’ve about had it with Comcast. I’ve been thinking of going back to Directv, but I suppose if the cost of Fios is good we may give it a try.

“This still does not cover up the City caved. Funny, how the Council does not mine throwing money around on all sorts of useless items(Manassas next and the Mason elitist arts center are just two examples that come to mind) and projects. But when it comes to fighting criminals, the Council suddenly becomes fiscally aware. What a joke.”

Now you play nice and ask this man for his advice on Fios? Andy is too nice of a guy but if it were me I would tell you to go blow smoke.

It’s $100/month for the first year. Don’t know what it is for the second year off the top of my head.

    Peter,

So, as a City Council member, he should never be questioned on his votes? He should never be held accountable? Seems you think along the lines of Obama, who would have radio stations shut down and ads taken down if they are not in lock step with his views, or have law enforcement go after people who Obama thinks is lying. Get real. I’ve given Andy and the Council credit in the past and I am sure I will do so in the future.

  5. Comcast has served this City poorly. We have been left behind in the hardware they offer, and their video service in the City is starved for bandwidth. FIOS can’t come soon enough, I can’t wait for them to light up my neighborhood!

  6. COM,
Being held accountable is fine and should be done. But calling Andy and the rest of council a “joke” is out of line. And asserting that Andy supports criminals and provides them money is absurd and an insult to Andy and all of us who have, and still do, support him. Personally I want to thank Andy for all of his hard work, I have been in this city for more than 3 decades and I have never seen any public servant put more effort into their position than Andy. And if I were ever to vilify a council member, I surely would not hide behind an alias, that is a sign of a coward.

Peter G, take this person for what he is. He sits on this blog in disguise and makes statements he can not back up, but when given the chance to back them up, he refuses to contact me. As a very long time employee of the COM, I can say, I keep in touch with what is happening in all three jurisdictions because they all affect me and the City of Manssas, and no, I am not a resident of Manassas, is heads and tails above the rest.

  8. Thanks Former! Prices are down, you should take advantage and move to our fair city!

Who is Peter G? Is Formercom not a made up name? Those could simply be whomever you want people to believe.

The money will in fact be used by criminals, you know, illegals.

Exactly what statements have I not been able to back up?

The Sign was illegal and as far as I know the person behind it did not have any punishment placed on him. How is that wrong?

Again, you two would fit in well with the Obama camp, and their dislike for anything that is not approved by the master himself.

Some of the money will be used by illegals. Some of it will be used to go after another City trying to save its future.

COM, again, if you want to discuss this with me, email me. How many times do I have to say it to you. I am not going to debate you on this blog.

  13. COM.
Plenty of people know who I am, I have been around too long for folks not to know who I am. I have no problem with not identifying yourself, unless you trash someone over and over. Anonymous opinions are fine, but calling someone a joke and accusing them of helping criminals is a different matter. I could be wrong, I may not have read all his posts but, I don’t believe Former has done anything but give his opinion, I don’t think he has accused anyone of anything. But I agree with Former, I will not hash this out with you on Andy’s blog anymore.

  14. Peter, thanks for your kind words. I appreciate the support.

Well, it just so happens there are plenty of people who know me as well, including many if not all of the Council members.

Have illegals learned to not live in overcrowded homes? Have those that support illegals learned to live within zoning laws? I think not. I’ve given my opinion, but it seems because it does not match up with yours and former, it seems wrong.

    Formercom,

Go figure, I did not post to you.
