I would like to know why illegals and or gang members seem to think our City is the place to go to commit crimes and to live? Many surrounding Cities do not have that issue. So, what exactly is it about Manassas that makes us a destination for such people? Where does that failure get placed at?

Andy,

That's by no means the only issue. However, I'm pretty shocked that you seem to just blow that off. Talk about an out of touch and a I don't care attitude of a local elected official. However, I'll add, a City Council that sits by while the school system falls apart. A City Council that allows illegals and gang members to run freely around the City committing crimes. A City Council that gives thousands to a arts center that is not even in the City. Should I continue?

"City Officials Are Guest of Lions Club
A well-attended meeting of the Lions Club last Wednesday evening joined with officials of the town in
a free discussion of general problems of municipal government which are before the Council.
Citing some specific problems of policy and practice as well as engineering, Mayor Davis indicated
that because of the failure of the average citizen to weigh all the responsibilities of the Council
in relation to some personal grievance, the lot of a town official is often not a happy one."
(Manassas Journal 12-1-1949)
Harry Davis served as Mayor of Manassas from 1921 to 1964.

I am going to go out on a limb here, but I believe this article will be seen in the future as an example of the chronicling of the end of the Republic. Institutions fail because people fail in their duty. America is not great because of its institutions, but because of its people. I think too many of us have forgotten( or never been taught) what it means to be a free people, and part of the result of that is the neglect Andy sees. No government lasts – and ours is no exception. Is it cyclical - of course. Will it be accelerated by technology - probably. What will it look like – who knows? Maybe local government may become more important, maybe irrelevant. Meanwhile, I give Andy great credit for his conscientious approach to governance of the City(our disagreements aside!) It can be messy, as he and his fellow councilmen deal with the hand that the State and Feds are dealing them. It's a tall order.
As to the recent election, at least some changes were made. The bullet vote made an interesting result!

You're going to have to come up with more than the Ballet in order to convince me that the City is failing due to "shady" politics...

I tend to agree with Chet. Too often it seems elected officials vote for their own interests over everything else. We have a bit of that going on right now, and while it may not be illegal, it does have the appearance of somone taking advantage of the system. That's sleazy politics and why things are failing. People would rather just throw their arms up and be done with it. That of course just leads to more corruption.
