For everyone that asks (and there are many of you), I spoke with the Chief this morning and he informs me that there are 110 (or so) offenders at the jail that have immigration detainers on them. This may not seem like a lot but when one considers that about two weeks ago the number was 80 it is pretty amazing how fast the number is going up. Some are first-time felons and some have several DUI’s and/or previous deportations on their records. Thanks to our law-enforcement folks for working so hard on this.

What is great about this, is now we can extrapolate to determine the approximate illegal population over-all. Also, this should show people just how bad a problem this is. If the total Jail population represents X% of the total populations of PWC, MC and MPC, and Y% of the jail population is illegal, then one could get a pretty solid estimate of how large our total illegal alien population is. Simple algebra.

@Councilman Harrover:
Thank you for the update, and thank you for creating this webspace as a way for citizens to interact with you. I had the pleasure of meeting with the Mayor and several other Council Members at the last town hall meeting, though I missed you specifically, and was impressed with the caliber and character of all of them, and I’m very proud to be represented by such.
@Mr. Thomas:
I only took a couple of basic statistics courses while in school, but extrapolating information from a specific population like a jail, into the general population, is going to be extremely skewed. Also remember that “generally speaking”, newer immigrant groups have traditionally had issues with our legal system when they first began coming to the US in large numbers. For example the Irish had the “Paddy Wagon” named after them, presumably because it was used to fill with primarily Irish immigrants, and I only need to point to pop-culture movies to relate issues with Italians when their respective immigration waves began. I also submit there are exceptions to this rule, such as Asians, whom are considered by many to be the “model immigrant”, which I believe only furthers the point that the reliability from any samples taken from an incarcerated population, and applied to general population, will be in question. Mr. Thomas, I do not intend for this post to be a flame towards you in any way, so please do not take it as any more than an alternative viewpoint.

“newer immigrant groups have traditionally had issues with our legal system when they first began coming to the US in large numbers.”
Fuzzy,
You do make some valid points, and I didn’t take it as a “flame”. This is a forum for comment, and civil debate, and I appreciate your POV. However, the opposition (Mexicans Without Borders, and Woodbridge Workers committee) likes to claim that their community commits crimes at a far lower rate than the population (read legal) in general. So, if we are to accept what they say, for the purposes of debate, those of us opposed to their agenda can use the extrapolation to arrive at a number that they (the opposition) must accept as well.
Perhaps not pure statistics, but close enough for the sake of argument, IMHO.
