My Side of the Fence

The danger isn't going too far. It's that we don't go far enough.

Land Use meeting

This is late but there is a land use meeting today in which we will take up:

1.  The revised sign ordinance which will slightly shrink the size of allowable residential signs and updates the code on commercial signs.

2. A “demonstration” ordinance that concerns demonstration permits and the like.

3. New ordinance that aims to update our zoning code to make it easier for the City to better police derelict buildings.

Number 2 & 3 are, in my understanding, a response to changing case law and changing needs of the City.  Neither is without at least some controversy.  The sign ordinance was just outdated and kinda useless for a long long time so it’s being updated.  It was first updated last fall for residential and this update is for the commercial side.

  1. Andy, will there be a public hearing on Item 2? There are enough concerns about some of the additional requirements that we need to be transparent about this and seek public comment at a hearing, especially the Security Plan requirement. I’ve not reviewed it thoroughly enough to provide additional feedback but I know others are concerned. I know Mr. Crim said that a public hearing was not necessary but I recommend it as an option. Thanks.

  2. Don’t know if there will be a public hearing yet but just because we are not required to have one doesn’t mean that we won’t.

I’ve discussed this with other Council members but I haven’t heard from any citizens yet. I understand the concerns conveyed by council members but am unaware if the concerns in the public at large are different or not.

I am all for that third ordinance on derelict buildings…anything the Land Use can pass on that helps fight any form of blight in the code is fine by me. Like the one on demonstrations too as it backs up Public Safety.

The sign ordinance had a Public Hearing the other night….and as I recall, it got carried foward to Feb. 8th. I guess a few more tweaks before it goes to first reading? Public Hearing or not, Dave, you can always sumbit comments in writing for consideration – even asking for them to be entered into record.

  4. I think we had a pretty succesful meeting tonight…

Isn’t it nice to work on something which is successful without “someone” writing a thesis on them? 🙂

Glad it was a successful meet!
