My Side of the Fence

The danger isn't going too far. It's that we don't go far enough.

What a game!

I was able to go to half of the Eagles away game last night and, despite the cold, it was a great half of football.  For the second week in a row OHS upset their undefeated opponents.  From my vantage point, it looked like there were far more OHS fans than Woodbridge, and we were much louder.

Our defense was pretty stout and layin’ the wood to the other side.  The offense was exciting and succesful in moving the ball.  Special teams in weather like that is tough but we were able to overcome it.

I don’t think Demeria saw me but I heard him.  Easily the most wound-up I’ve been at a football game in awhile.  Osbourn runs out of a triangle formation and they seem to get their best plays off the edge.  I’m yelling for our QB to RUN RUN RUNSLOW SLOW! RUNSLOW!CUT!!  All kinds of new words…But, I wasn’t alone.  My voice is pretty torn up.

There was even a kid there who had painted his body and was shirtless.  He was okay for about a quarter before he was shivering all over.  Someone finally gave him a blanket.

Congrats Eagles!! Great game.

  1. WHAT A GAME!! If you weren’t there you missed a great one. Osbourn out played woodbridge all night long. We gave them chances with some turnovers then smacked them right in the mouth. Our defense was stellar. Our offense was exciting and strong. We had some problems with special teams but our boys overcame that problem.

Our fans kicked butt too. The visitor’s stands are much smaller but we had standing room only and the home team stands were less than half full. What a showing for a 7-4 team traveling to a 11-0 team. Hats off to the fans of the Eagles. I will need the week to recover but the team, the coaches and the fans will be ready for our state game at HOME! next Saturday.

  2. Tim, my voice is shot.

These kids played as a true team, but my game ball goes to C.J. Jackson. His final tackle of the game has to go down as the most impressive and important tackle in Osbourn football history.

For all you cupcakes that were to afraid of the cold to show up, I’ll fill you in. With only a couple minutes left on the clock Woodbridge got the ball inside of the ten yard line with a chance to take the lead. After 3 strong stops by the defense, Woodbridge had a 4th and short for a go-ahead touchdown.

Of course Woodbridge hands the ball to the best high school running back in Virginia, Deantwan Williams. Williams runs straight ahead into the pile. I go crazy thinking we stuffed him up at the line. Williams suddenly spins out of the pile to his left and sprints to the endzone. (Before I go any further let me tell you this kid Williams was an impressive runner all night. Our kids swarmed him every time he got the ball but he broke away and stayed on his feet after many a good hit.) I go from crazy rabid fan to completely deflated in a nanosecond when it appears that Williams is about to go in for the go-ahead touchdown with very little time left on the clock.

In steps C.J. Jackson. First of all he showed the good minded football discipline to stay in his position and not go flying into the pile at the line of scrimmage. Second, he sprints out and meets Williams FACE TO FACE / MANO E MANO. (From my perspective it still looks like a lost cause – one of the best HS running backs in the country against one lone cornerback both sprinting sideways along the endzone line. It seems all Williams needed to do was just dive forward and the game was over.) But Jackson was able to use leverage like that of a Judo Blackbelt. Jackson was able to get a good hold on Williams, spun him around, and slammed him to the ground saving the game.

From rabid crazed fan to completely deflated, back to crazed fan all within the time frame of about 4 seconds.

    AAHHH, the love of football.

Williams is not only one of the best running backs in Virginia, but also the Nation. One recruiting service has him ranked as the number one inside runner in the nation. As I said last week, it is tough for a team to beat the same team twice in a season, and Osbourn it seemed cut down on giving up the big plays.

  4. Sorry COM but the only reason woodbridge was even in the game was because of big plays. A long interception return for a touchdown and a screen pass that went 70 for another score. We also had a bad snap on a punt and that led to a 12 yard drive for woodbridge to score their last 6 points. Without those 3 big plays it would have been a blow out. Our kids just flat out gave woodbridge a beat down. If we can cut down on the mistakes I think we have a great shot of visiting Virginia Tech on Saturday the 6th of December. But for now I will see ALL of you this Saturday at Osbourn! And Andy you need to check in with Timmy if you want credit for being there. Jackson this gives you credit for both playoff games!

  5. The kid that returned that INT was one of the fastest people I’ve seen lately…he took off like a rocket. Also, thought the ref blew the call on that long pass we had over the middle by calling it incomplete.

What time is the game Saturday?

    Tim,

I was not at the game, so I just assumed they did cut down on them. I did go to the regular season game and they gave up a number of big plays which did them in.

The game will either start at 1:00 or 1:30. The schedule has not been updated on the Virginia High school league webpage yet. But, Saturday games have those start times. Varina is undefeated, so far…

  8. Saturday’s game starts at 1:30. Tickets are being sold this week at the school to try to avoid lines on Saturday. Tickets are $8.00 each and regular season passes will not get you in the gate. “The spirit of the schools, the spirit of the city, starts on Friday nights in the fall” (or in this case Saturday afternoon)

  9. Tim, thanks for the update. Will try my best to be there.
