My Side of the Fence

The danger isn't going too far. It's that we don't go far enough.

Neighborhood Services Conference

Congrats to the City staff for pulling off another good neighborhood conference.  I was one of the speakers and, while I feel that my speech was not a great one, the point of the conference is to enable the people who are trying to save their neighborhoods so my performance didn’t much matter.

This conference and the City’s Neighborhood Services department are crucial in keeping our strong neighborhoods strong and giving our weaker ones a hand up.  I hope that everyone had a good time and learned some things that can help you in your quest.

  1. It was fun working on it. I was one of Kisha’s army of volunteers. I met several new people and had some good conversations throughout. Seeing the youth involved was great — I really believe they will lead the way. After the conference, I gave a ride home to an elderly lady who lives in Georgetown South and we talked about trash and crime and how to make changes.

I think what I learned from this conference, as well as the one last year, is that action is much more satisfying than complaining.

Andy, if citizen volunteers were to work with the City to shoot videos (much like the ones you shot for Manassas Next) that showed how to solve neighborhood problems, could they be posted on the city Web site, or run on the government cable channel?

The purpose of the conference was to network and build community connections and partnerships. That kind of groundwork takes time to show results.

Kisha is having an “after the conference” meeting on Tuesday from 1 to 3 pm at the Boys & Girls Club. If anyone has comments to pass on to her, call 703-257-8240 or come by the meeting on the second floor.
