My Side of the Fence

The danger isn't going too far. It's that we don't go far enough.

OHS Principal Survey

So, I was tooling around on the schools website and found that the Principal at Osbourn, Mr. Conti, is retiring.  I actually know him as he was my science teacher when I was at Osbourn.  The schools are looking for a new principal and have put up a survey (located here) to get input from the community.  The questions are interesting but more importantly, there’s also a box at the bottom for free-form input.  The form seems to require that you rank the statements which is a little different but input is a good thing!

Go fill it out.

  1. Just did. Thanks.

  2. I did too, though my children are beyond Osbourn. Thanks, Andy.

  3. The new principal needs to project leadership to the effect that there is little doubt about who is in charge (tactfully). This may be extremely painful to a few veterans at the school, and may result in a few retirements, but this is what is needed. Very critical.

  4. I’m not sure of the value of the first 3 questions. Does your response get more weight depending on the activites you or your child participate in?

  5. No idea Chet.

My professional and personal view is this is only a survey designed if you have a child either in OHS, or is an “up and comer”.

Chet asks the right question – given this appears not designed as a non-probability survey, the first three questions could be weighted in terms of either your child is a student, or you are just a resident of the City who’s children have either already gone through the system, or you have no children in the system.

Of course, with only “in-house” advertising within MCPS about it – never heard about it until read here – I do not believe the leadership is looking for greater community input. And that is sad.

  7. The survey is a failed attempt to encourage community input. At least they did try….

  8. Any new principal needs to have the code of conduct of OHS enforced.

They also need to make themselves visable within the school. All students should know who their principal is and what they look like.
