My Side of the Fence

The danger isn't going too far. It's that we don't go far enough.

Foot Operation – Again.

Well, the cruddy little wart-like things that grew under the skin in my heel came back.  The same things I had removed last summer when I got a staph infection.  I put off having them taken out for several months so that I could enjoy vacation and train up for the Hampton Diabetes ride.  That, as it turns out, was a serious mistake.  The picture over there on the right is the intended victim after being cleaned and swabbed with the orange crap.

However, this post is less about slicing and dicing than it is about some funny (in hindsight) stuff:

I’m relegated to crutches for a couple of days to keep the heel from getting sore.  I borrowed the crutches from some of my facebook buds.  I have a confession to make: I hate crutches.  The last time I was on crutches was when I was 10.  If it wasn’t clear before, I’m fatter and older.  After a day on those things I’m prepared to get a wheel chair.  Crutches are devilishly simple things that are cunningly engineered to extract a terrible toll on your shoulders, arm pits and abdomen.  I suspect a conspiracy amongst my facebook friends….

As I mentioned, I’ve had these taken out before but since I delayed getting them diced this time, they were bigger.  This necessitated some industrial-strength numbing.  Previously, the doc would stick the needle in, there was a little pinch and that was it.  This time the doc came in and started spraying “cold stuff” on the area to be abused.  This made me worry.  I inquired.  The doc looked over and indicated that the things were bigger and he’d have to go deeper.  It was at this point that he picked up a needle that was completely full of liquid and stuck it in my foot.

I like to think I have a pretty high tolerance for pain.  I have glued together decently-sized cuts on my hands with pine sap when I was out in the middle of nowhere.  That “pain killer” shot was excruciating.  At one point, I asked the doc if it killed pain by making you pass out…:)

In any event, things seem to be moving along.  It’s pretty sore but not anything out of the ordinary.  I’ll be on the bike in about 4 days.  We’ll see what happens…
