My Side of the Fence

The danger isn't going too far. It's that we don't go far enough.

It’s getting close to that time

It’s a little early yet but the MJM ran an article today indicating that Senator Colgan may not run again.  I say it’s a little early as the biggest variable in the next race – redistricting – won’t happen until next winter.  The list of typical suspects to run to replace the Senator is pretty long at this early date.  The ones I can pull off the top of my head are Mayor Parrish, Del. Miller, Carroll Weimer, Bob Fitzsimmonds, Rex Parr, Supervisor Covington and Sup. Stirrup.  Greg has a post up about it as well and he includes Mrs. Bass in that list.  I hadn’t heard that before but I suppose any sitting politician in the County and City could be included.

For my part, I would hope that, if Senator Colgan decides to reture, that the community dwells for awhile on the tremendous service he has provided to his district over the years before we too wound up about the race to replace.  I think it’s a hell of a job to stay in office that long and still get stuff done….

Andy, unfortunately, once the Senator retires and the various Resolutions are read, and plaques are presented, it will be an all out field day. The blogs will go wild (on all sides – pros, cons, rants) and the freenzy will begin. Always happens after a long standing politician leaves the job.

Personally, I hope the Mayor says “thanks, but no thanks” till at least the rocky road is smoothed out again. His strong leadership, wide respect from many sides and levels, is what this City needs more than one more spot in the General Assembly.

  2. Ya, it’s hard to campaign on not raising taxes and then after the election vote for tax increases. It takes a special type of person to lie and get away with it.

It will be a great day for Virginia once Colgan is out of office.

  3. What I really like about Senator Colgan as Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, is in reducing Mental Health & Substance Abuse Prevention, Counseling & Treatment – that Committee turns around and – in seeing during this recession the increased sales at the ABC Stores, authorizes 10 more stores with potential profit of $3million. Way to go, Senate!

  4. Senator Colgan has served us honorably over 35 years and up until recently was an independent voice. He should retire for his health and spend the time with his wife and family. There are many strong Republican candidates and I can’t think of one Democrat. The Republican candidate needs to be someone with a proven, substantial electoral history on a City AND County level either as an elected official or candidate. The City represents a small part of the 29th District, so County-wide name recognition is crucial. Only two people came to mind: Del. Miller and Robert FitzSimmonds.
