My Side of the Fence

The danger isn't going too far. It's that we don't go far enough.

Neighborhood Conference

I am a shade late with this but the neightborhood conference is tomorrow!!  9:00 at the Boys & Girls club.

Update:  Conference was very well attended!  Prolly a couple hundred people there.  I was very impressed with the work that the City Staff did.

  1. I’ll be there!

  2. And Osbourn football plays GW-Danville in the first round of the playoffs at Liberty HS Saturday at 7PM.

  3. Our regional play off game has been rescheduled for Saturday @ 7:00 @ Liberty High School. There will be 3 games played there Saturday, and we are the last. This is also a reminder that the cost of the regional playoff game is $6.00 and that city passes and school ID’s are not accepted at the gate due to it being a regional playoff game. We hope this doesn’t discourage you from coming out to support us tomorrow night. Liberty H.S. is approx. a 30 minute drive south on Rt. 28 to Bealton – at the intersection of Rt. 17 turn right and the school is an immediate right off of 17.
Thanks again for all your support & GO OHS!
    Coach Schultze

  4. Tim,
Thank you for the information on the game tonight.

    Go Eagles!

  5. Did anyone from acorn show up at the conference?

  6. Osbourn has turned into a great playoff team, 55-15. A team that peaks at the right time of the season is the result of good coaching. They travel to North Stafford next Friday.

  7. This game could have been 70-0 if OHS didn’t start to empty
the bench during the 4th. At the end of the game the Eagles
were at the GW goal line, but took a knee instead of trying
to push it in for a needless TD. Our community should be
proud of a very good team that knows how to win with class.

    See you at North Stafford.

Nobody from acorn that I could see. Lots of people who want to make their neck of the woods a better place to live. Too bad there weren’t even more citizens there.

  9. Well, that’s a good thing that acorn did not show up. Apathy is the word that comes to my mind why more people are not involved. The people who keep up their homes and yards, etc, are not the ones that need to show up. The ones that do not keep their homes up and yards up, etc, are the ones that need to attend. However, trying to get those people to show is like trying to round cats. And, that is why bad areas stay bad areas.

That is also why I’m not in favor of these feel good events that really do nothing.

  10. The conference promoted Neighborhood Watch, Fire Corps and CERT (citizen emergency response teams), the building blocks of a safer community. Engaging citizens to do more at a time when government is doing less because of budget cuts is smart and proactive. Organizers served up the safety message with homebaked pies, home-grown entertainment and free first aid kits. What’s wrong with that?

There’s a debriefing meeting tomorrow (Nov 18) at 10 am, first floor city hall, Room 101. Anyone is welcome to share their two cents.

  11. Cindy,

Again, who is going to show up at these conferences, people who are already engaged, or those that are not? We’ve developed a culture that has made too many people dependent on the Goverment or others to fix their problems. The people who are hooked on Government, I.E. social programs, etc, just sit back and continue to let everyone else do the work. Personal responsibility has been replaced by an attitude that says the Government will do everything for me. That’s a cancer that once its gets a hold on a community is never going to get away.

Or, to be more blunt, there is a reason why GTS and POW are the way they are,and there is a reason why other neighorhoods in the City are not. Just because one might be poor, does not mean they do not have a personal responsibility to take care of their residence.

The Government should not have to tell people how to maintain their homes, etc, people should have pride enough to do the right thing.

  12. Again, this conference was not about home maintenance, it was about community safety. Oakenshaw had a tornado go through it. If it was your neighborhood, would you know what to do until the first responders got there? If you had to go to a shelter, what would happen to your pets? What if a disaster closed access to grocery stores or clean water for three days? http://www.readyvirginia.gov

  13. COM:

You’re starting to wander off base here. The Neighborhood Watch in GTS tries very hard and their HOA meets regularly. It was the HOA and watch (along with some City help) that chased the crack dealers out of there 10 years ago. However, their numbers are dwindling and they could use help.

I don’t know that the difference is so much that anyone there is addicted to government handouts but more that so the number of involved residents is dwindling. This is the same trend we see everywhere…

  14. Cindy,

Of course I know what to do in case of a storm, etc. I came home two years ago to find one of our trees had been knocked down into the house blocking the front door. I had the tree cut up and at the dump within two hours. I know where the gas/power/water shut offs are. I have self protection.

While we do not have a large stock of food and water, we do have enough to last for a week or so or more. Thanks to enjoying camping, we have tents, sleeping bags, a camp stove etc. I’m not trying to sound smug, but really should it take such an event to get people informed on what they should have on hand?

This is why whenever we have a threat of a huge snow storm, people panic and buy everything in the grocery store because they think they will be without staples for a few days.

I’m amazed at the dependency of people on the Goverment. While it is nice to have first responders and they can and do make all the difference in the World, they can’t be everywhere at the same time. And that is why people need to be more independent and look out for themselves, rather then believe they will be first on the list for the police and fire This is about taking care of your house, and does carry over to how one feels about their neighborhood, house, community etc.

Andy, while the crack dealers might be gone, there is still plenty of crime that happens in GTS because the residents have allowed the neighorhood to go down hill, because they have no pride in their community. Living within sight of it, I’m fully aware of the issues they have. The reason there is less involvement is as I pointed out, is there are too many people who have grown up expecting everyone else to get things done.

  15. Citizen, there is a formation meeting of a new neighborhood leaders group at 7 pm this Friday, Nov. 20 at the GTS community center. You’re more than welcome to come.

I heard at the debriefing meeting today that the Commonwealth of Virginia picked up on our neighborhood conference and gave us kudos for educating local citizens about basic community safety.

I’m forwarding all the photos from the conference if you want to use them, Andy.

The conference was sponsored by Glenn C. Moore, a certified financial planner who donated the money for the neighborhood awards. There were other sponsors — Wegmans, Shoppers Food Warehouse, VHDA, GMU and more. Wal-Mart outdid themselves, they gave a free full size first aid kit to everyone who came.

We’re already setting up committees to plan next year’s confererence. Anyone who wants to volunteer is welcome to come.

  16. Again, if people are that stupid to not know how to handle themselves in an emergency, we are in worse shape then I thought. It simply boggles my mind people need to look toward the Government for such advice.

But, of course that is what some want anyway, because it gives them the chance to continue to grow the Government. Why do you think most of the jobs “created” by the “stimulus” package are Government jobs? The goal of the “stimulus” package was not to create private sector jobs, but to grow Government. And as a Government worker, are you going to want to eliminate your job? Of course not. So, now we’ll have a bunch of unfunded positions all around the Nation that will have to be paid for by the local tax payers, that is of course after they provide more of their money to the Federal Goverment when Feds raise our taxes next year.

  17. I sure hope these guys are caught soon. On the other hand, I suppose if they break into the wrong house where the home owner is armed, we might be able to avoid having to pay their rent at the pokie.

    MANASSAS CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT

    PRESS RELEASE

    November 18, 2009

    Residential Burglaries

During the past two weeks the City of Manassas has had several Residential Burglaries in and around the Wellington and Cloverhill Neighborhoods.

In the majority of these cases the suspect(s) have entered the homes by smashing out a rear window during the day or night when the residents are not at home. The burglars are taking jewelry, cash, guns, playstations, video games, and other small items of value.

The Manassas City Police Department is asking for the public to report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods immediately by calling 703-257-8000. Citizens are reminded to close their garage doors, lock all windows and doors and to turn on outside lights during the night.

The Manassas City Crime Solvers will pay a cash reward up to $1000 for information that leads to an arrest in these cases. The confidential 24-hour tip line is (703) 330-0330.

  18. Yes, my wife and I got the Code Red phone calls on that yesterday.

    Locked and loaded…

    From my BlackBerry Storm…

  19. Andy, the first meeting of the new “Neighborhoods Workshop Group” brought together eight city residents from five neighborhoods, HOA and non-HOA, at the Georgetown South Community Center Friday night. We plan to have another workshop in December to exchange ideas and resources for increasing community involvement and plan our first joint action project.

  20. The print edition, page A15, has two additional photos. No mention of the emergency pet shelter but the Post covered that aspect well.

  21. BTW, the Police arrested a few fine citizens of the GTS over the weekend that are linked to the recent home break ins. As I’ve been saying GTS is a lost cause, and no matter how many “feel good” events are held, is not going to change that fact.

I’m disappointed these criminals did not met up with an armed home owner.

  22. Officer Scott Stallard, who spoke at the neighborhood conference, held a Neighborhood Watch training at the city police dept last night for people from five city neighborhoods — basic dos and don’ts to become the eyes and ears of local police and help make our neighborhoods safer. He gave us insight into the burglaries and the training he did in Wellington last week, where their neighborhood watch is now 90 strong. Residents can also request Officer Stallard to do a security check of their home.

Thank you, city police and thank you, residents who care enough to learn how to look out for each other.

  23. Cindy,

Again, you just do not get it. How many of the criminals showed up at the “feel good” events? How many of the parents of the criminals showed up at the events? I bet zero. So, again, the people who need to be at the events are not, because they want everyone else to take care of the problems in the community. They have this attitude because the Goverment has told them they do not need to worry about their community, someone else will take care of it.

BTW, how did the community watch prevent the home break ins? We can have all the community watch programs we want, but that is not going to stop kids who are being raised incorrectly from engaging in criminal conduct.
