My Side of the Fence

The danger isn't going too far. It's that we don't go far enough.

The list so far

Steve Randolph, posts the following in a different thread:

“Off this topic, but went by the city clerk’s office late this afternoon
and ten people had handed in applications to be considered for
the open council seat (today is the deadline).
They are (in no special order):

– Julie Cochran
– Sanford Williams
– Robyn Williams
– Robert Schipp
– Audrey Sensale
– Dora Brooks
– Sheryl Bass
– Bruce Gross
– Dave Core
– John Myers

The Citizens of Manassas are fortunate to have these
individuals offer their services to our community.

The public hearing for candidates to present their statements
of interest and be interviewed is set for June 3rd, and the
Mayor may continue it to June 4th if needed. The appontment
is slated to be made June 8th and the swearing in June 10th.”

  1. David Core? Was he on council in June of 2008? Looks like that is what he claimed when he donated money to Gilmore.

I know he ran for office, and maybe he donated money left over from his campaign. Of course I’m just guessing on this. Otherwise, I don’t think he should/could put down he was on the Council.

  3. I had forgotten about that online contribution to the Gilmore campaign — I found the receipt but I don’t recall their asking for occupation and employer which I usually put as “Association Manager”, “MFSA”. I don’t know. No biggie really!

It’s good to see that the interest to serve the City for 20 hours a week or so and attend 2-3 meetings a week as a member of Council is still very strong and there are people who have been active volunteers for the City.

  4. Dave,
Was the money from your run for nomination? I would really love to know how this non-“biggie” happened. It looks very strange to me, I think an explanation is in order.

  5. Good morning. Yes, it looks strange. That particular contribution was from my personal account. If I had typed the wrong information and that is what was captured, then it was a mistake. I take all responsibility for that. I need to see the online validation to know for sure. It would not have been any intent to deceive or mislead. If you want to chat about it, please call me at (703) 369-5540. I hope we can talk about other aspects of my application for Council. I sense you’re an active participant in local affairs. Have a thoughtful Memorial Day.

  6. Just got off the phone with the former treasurer of the Gilmore campaign. She said that when the information was left off the online form, they usually just Googol’d the name to fill in the info for FEC requirements. She said that the information on the form submitted with my name was likely gathered this way and she said she’d submit an amended form to show the correct information. At that time my campaign website was still up from last year and was prominent in a Googol search.

  7. I look forward to watching the interviews, and agree with Mr. Randolph that we are very lucky to have 10 applicants, especially when volunteerism across America is dwindling. This is a critical appointment for Council and the City. It is a long appointment (3 years).

At the risk of being negative, the City is in a financial and economic development crossroads. We have a depressed real estate market, with overcrowding in some areas and abandoned/vacant houses in others. Add to this gangs, schools that need improvement, and increasing poverty (that will result in increased crime and drugs), and the need for leadership and moral courage is evident.

Past performance is usually a good indication of future results (our housing market not withstanding) and I hope that Councils’ questions will go beyond tax philosophy and each applicants demonstrated commitment to the City, to their vision for our future, and what changes or initiatives they would champion to ensure our long term viability as a thriving community.

    Dave,

    Thanks for clearing the air.

  9. Audrey’s name is misspelled and unfortunately was picked up by the News & Messenger’s opinion page this morning.

    It is Audrey Sensale.

Good luck to Audrey, Dave, Julie and all these fine applicants, and thanks making a difference by stepping up to serve.

Thanks for catching that Cindy. I apologize for misspelling
Audrey Sensale’s name (had quickly written them down on
a pad late Friday just as the Clerk’s office was closing). The
names and other data are slated to be shared with the media
today and hopefully it will be correct in tomorrow’s paper.
(Also note that at 5:30PM in City Hall today the Mayor will
draw names to establish the presentation order of the
applicants – the public is invited).

    Fixed the misspelling…

  12. COM,
If Dave was a liberal Democrat would you feel the same about his explanation? It seems a little thin.
