There is a very cool article in the NY Times about the Grateful Dead. It covers the great debate over what is their best show and also some really great online sources of Dead recordings. I don’t profess to be a Dead scholar but I had heard of the Cornell show mentioned in the article. However, I had never heard of the show they did with Janis Joplin in 1970.
My normal speed is somewhat edgier but the show with Janis is very interesting. Check it if you get a minute!

I bet a lot of people who attended that show do not remember it.

Read the article! They interview members of the Dead and they claim to remember “themes” or “periods of time”….not a huge shock I guess.

Andy, talk about a walk down memory lane! And also possibly showing my age… I remember the concert in June/July 1970 as it was the last really big run before Janis Joplin died that October.
It was a run through Canada…no USA tour and was kind of an oddball mix for the Dead to be playing being a rock group: There was Janis with her hard blues, and a couple of other acts that were mainly folk or blues based. One of the acts was a married couple singing a lot of songs by a young Canadian songwriter trying to break into the biz by the name of Gordon Lightfoot.
There were exerts from the conference the Dead tried to get into records but did not fare very well. There was a release in the early early 80s of the concert by the folks holding the rights to Janis Joplin’s music.
Do love your comment though giving me a big laugh – yeah, given the substance abuse of the time, remembering only “periods” is a nice way to put it.
It was still an oddball concert tour for the Dead to play though.

Cheers for the Rolling Stones–they were formed when I was still
in High School and Mick Jaggar is older than me! (That’s how we
got around back then – rolling stones -you know, like the Flintstones).
And Stevie Nicks/ Fleetwood Mac. Yes.

Off topic, but what the heck-
Here comes the Judge and the Groom!
Congratulations to Mayor Parrish and his new bride, to Councilman Smith
for his appointment as a District Court Judge (starting May 1st),
to Councilman Aveni for a fine proposed city budget presentation
last night, to Councilman Way for an award for his work with
the Commission on Aging and to the rest of us for not spilling our water
bottles during the meeting.
(Based on past practice, once we receive Judge Smith’s resignation
from the Council we will seek applications from qualified citizens
to fill his unexpired term, hold public interviews, and then vote
on a replacement – all within the next sixty days)
