My Side of the Fence

The danger isn't going too far. It's that we don't go far enough.

This week

There is a work session tonight on some technology upgrades for community development.  Wednesday there is a joint work session over at Utilities at 6:00 with the schools.  The big tamale – Budget Mark Up is following the school session at 7:00.  Mark-Up is where the Council makes its own adjustments to the budget and finalizes it.

To date, we’ve had 3 otherwise uninvolved citizens attend a work session and 2 people speak during citizens time about the budget.  On a positive note, we have had good numbers of folks show up for the public safety work sesssions.

    Andy,

I was not able to make the meeting due to work, but I sure hope the Council did not provide any additional money to the school board. The release of the drop out numbers for the City should be an embarrassment to everyone. The City has the highest drop out rate(11.8%) among all of the local Counties. The State wide is 9%, with twenty percent of that made up of students who are ESL students.

We spend more per ESL student then regular students, and it seems we are not able to retain them through graduation. Of course the school system can’t force students to attend school, but it does show spending money and extra resources on a group of students who have a higher drop out rate seems pretty foolish.
