Household Waste Extravaganza

I’ve been out of town for a bit and I have some thoughts on the ICE problems over at the jail and some stuff to pass along about Manassas Next but here’s some information you can actually use:

The City is having a household waste drop-off event this weekend – April 5th It will be at the Manassas waste transfer station at 8305 Quarry Road. No fee for City residents.

They’ll take most kinds of electronics including monitors, computers and TV’s as well as the usual paints, oils, solvents, insecticides, batteries and fertilizers.

They will not take industrial waste.

The Shred-It truck is also supposed to be there, thanks to sponsorship by some local banks, so you can bring secure documents for on site shredding. Paper or binder clips and staples okay. Resulting confetti will be recycled.

Also, the collection is only until noon on April 5. Clean out all that hazardous stuff from your sheds and garages and take it to the transfer station!

And then make a commitment to buy less in the future. You don’t need Round Up to kill weeds or 10 tons of fertilizer (the time to fertilize is in the fall, anyway). And when you buy paint, just buy what you need. If you have some left over, use it as a base paint for painting something else. When you go to the transfer station you will see how much paint is wasted. The best recycling is done at the cash register. Only buy what you need and use green non-toxic alternatives!

  2. I was all ready to take a bunch of stuff, load up my car, try to get there and the site is blocked for the Christmas Parade. Pretty dumb day to schedule it if you ask me! So, I’ll be ready this weekend (there isn’t like some April Fool’s Day Parade Saturday, is there?).

I think the City needs to offer MORE of these, or work out some deal with PWC for City residents to take HHW to the Balls Ford Rd transfer station. I’m willing to bet far too much ends up going in normal trash (especially things like paint cans and such), often because people don’t want to be bothered with holding on to it for a month or 2 or 4 before they can get rid of it properly.

By the way, did you know Andy that if you go by Public Works and get a printed copy of the HHW schedule (a nice little pamphlet of info), the dates listed are something like 2005-2006 or 2004-2005 or something like that? Well, at least the City web site (nice new redesign by the way!) has the 2008 schedule posted.

  3. Had to attend a college weekend and missed this great opportunity to clean out the stuff that could not be trashed. I’m in agreement with other residents. Any way these types of services could be offered more than once a year? Thanks for keeping your eye on the city initiative to the clean up effort!! It’s the time of year when grass grows and GROWS. PLEASE keep an eye on the propertys in the city that get neglected and keep the pressure on the powers that be to get the job done. I’m doing the part I can by calling the violations in and following up.

  4. Hi Lindy,
These ARE held more than just once a year. They are generally the first Saturday of the month (except July due to the 4th) 9 of the 12 months. The next one is this Saturday (May 3). The full schedule is at: http://www.manassascity.org/index.asp?NID=297

I went in April, and the nice City lady that was there said it was the biggest turnout she’d ever seen, and the guys working the sorting were asking how close to noon it was (closing time) so the constant influx would stop (there was so much there I don’t know how they were going to sort it all)!
