My Side of the Fence

The danger isn't going too far. It's that we don't go far enough.

Bike Manassas Meeting

If you’re interested, I’m going to have a @BikeManassas meeting this Saturday at 12:00 at my office.  9321 West St. in Old Town.  I don’t really have an agenda for the meeting as I’ve never done anything like this before.  My thought is that what the organization ends up doing will depend on who shows up and what their interests are.  After all, folks are the most motivated when they’re doing stuff they like!

Some of the possibilities include reviewing the bike plan, lobbying for improvments or setting up a bike event of some sort.  Also, I’m meeting with a bike-related group in the county tomorrow night to see if there isn’t some synergy there.  I’ll let you know what happens.

  1. I’ll be there. I’m bringing the window flyers and pamphlets I have been working on, to promote the group.

Yesterday, when walking down the sidewalk by POW3 from dropping my car at the Shell Station for service, had four yahoos on bikes ripping down and had to step aside. Times like that I wish for a cop sitting along Liberia from 28south to about Stonewall with a speeddial specific number to call. Or for signs that say “Bike Route – get your butt on the road and keep off the sidewalk!”

  3. I hate to see cyclists (or anyone really) behaving boorishly. I was on a 25 mi ride yesterday and was on the bike path next to the parkway when I was passed by a guy on a bike who was really moving. It is customary to announce “on your left” as you approach so you don’t scare someone and possibly crash them. He flew by without a word and it does startle you. He then preceeded to blow through the intersection at Yates Ford and nearly caused a car crash.

Sometime I’ll have to do a blog post on bike paths. There are bike paths and then there are bike paths. I find it at least a little ironic that, although I advocate for more bike paths in Manassas, I really have no use for them myself. I ride a road bike and it just isn’t suitable for the paths in the City.
