My Side of the Fence

The danger isn't going too far. It's that we don't go far enough.

Tysons!

Some have complained about the development direction taken in Manassas but, compared to Fairfax, we’re amatuers.  Take a look at this WaPo story.  30 storey towers?  1500 apartments?  These guys are serious.  Let’s hope that almost everyone that moves there either works there or rides the metro.  If they dump that many cars on the beltway it will be (as the diplomats put it) “unhelpful”.  Also note that Lerner, the company who is developing our own Gateway park, is right in the thick of this.

Outlawing Spanking?

This is a bit off my regular beat but I see on the news that someone in CA is trying to pass a law outlawing spanking.  I suppose, as with all things, if you employ the practice in moderation it is probably effective.  Go too far, of course, and it is abusive.  The larger question is does the government have any place further intruding in family matters?  Many things that different parents do could border on someone’s definition of “abuse”.  Too much homework?  Abuse.  Not enough exercise time or activities provided?  Abuse.  This seems ridiculous.
