OK, one of the biggest questions I’ve been getting has to do with the road closures and event info for the 150th commemeration. Here is the best info I’ve got:
GIS maps (really good) http://www.manassascity.org/index.aspx?NID=1098#Sesquicentennial Scroll down a little to see them.
Calendar of all events: http://manassascivilwar.org/planned-events-details
Map of all events: http://files.manassascivilwar.org/150_Map.pdf
Traffic and Parking Plan: http://files.manassascivilwar.org/Road-Closures.pdf
Candy Factory events: http://media.center-for-the-arts.org/events/viewevent.aspx?id=7151
Yep, this is going to be a bit challenging but be cool (haha, it’s going to be hot!) and enjoy it. I think it’s going to be one of the best things to come to town in a long time!

Meh. I prefer touring historical sites, including Civil War battlefields, without the crowds. I’m not really into reenactments or crowded sites in general; I find it wonderful to walk the battlefields with just a few other people. I think the atmosphere of a site is lost when lots of people are there. But don’t let my personal opinion deter the rest of you folks!
Also I found it amusing the only ad on the site map is apparently for an
old folks homeactive adult (55+) community. Is that who the City’s events are targeted towards, old peopleactive adults over 55 who will be so impressed by the City’s events that they will want to live here?July 15, 2011 at 8:46 am
@A: sponsors are sponsors my friend. If you wanted to spring for it, we’ll put your picture there….

FYI – In preparation for next week’s 1911 Peace Jubilee, a huge
United States flag has been attached to the Old PW Courthouse
at the Corner of Lee and Grant in Manassas. Very impressive.

Man, the grand old flag on the red courthouse is truly incredible. What a sight! It inspired us to add more red, white and blue bunting on our front fence. Sitting on the porch earlier this evening we could hear the band at the Harris Pavillion play the National Anthem and, later on, the Stars and Stripes Forever.

I like the banners and American Flags the City has put up. However, it would be nice to see a few Confederate Flags as well. Virginia of course was in the Confederate States of America, we are also in a County that had a number of units raised to fight in the Confederate Army. If we want to be historically correct, there should be a few Confederate Flags.

Andy, agree we should all attempt to
“be cool and enjoy it”, but with max temps
forecasted to be over 100 degrees (with high humidity)
that may require some extra fortitude from all of us.

Please to be advised that if the weather cracks a “wet bulb” of 110, the NPS must follow Federal guidelines and reduce the levels of activities. Hopefully, the big reenactment out at Paige Farm will be over before the dreaded Level 5 Heat Index hits.
Interesting though to see in the news the recalculation of visitors – started at 30K to 40K coming; now estimate of 17,000 for the big reenactment.

The “Things You Don’t Want to Miss” is your best bet:

There’s even an air-conditioned inside fashion show in the lineup, “Sesquicentennial Tableau Fashion Show” in the Jennie Dean gym at 9 am and 2 pm on July 23.

And in the News & Messenger today, this lineup of speakers and authors at the Center for the Arts over the four days:

Was a wee bit bummed that we were out of town all week, and didn’t get back till almost everything was done. Considering the crushing heat, I don’t think I could have got the Thomas ladies out to too many events, so perhaps the week at the beach was more productive.
