you were right.  It seems that, due to variations in the Earth’s rotational speed when compared to time as measured by atomic clocks that it is necessary to add a second to the clock this year.  I originally read about it over at slashdot but if you have a burning desire to read and understand more, wikipedia has some stuff.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone.  I’m working on staying away from my business for the next few days and spending some time with the family and friends.  We had a great Christmas but I did discover that my daughter no longer believes in Santa Claus.  I greeted that revelation with mixed emotions but her feelings on the matter were direct: she felt betrayed to find that the Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy were all make believe.  She didn’t understand my comment that “It only gets more complicated from here…”
