My Side of the Fence

The danger isn't going too far. It's that we don't go far enough.

VML Award for Manassas!

The Virginia Municipal League convention is this week in Richmond.  I attended the first two days but had to come back last night for a Museum Board meeting.  The big awards banquet was last night and Manassas was the recipient of the Presidents award for our Neighborhood Revitalization Project!

Selected bits of the press release:  “The Virginia Municipal League (VML) has
notified the City of Manassas that the municipality will be awarded the VML
President’s Award 2011 for its Neighborhood Services revitalization projects, including 1 By Youth, Week of Hope and Neighborhood Improvement Circles.

The VML President’s Award is the most prestigious award given by the Virginia Municipal League, recognizing the best of all candidates nominated  in VML’s annual achievement awards competition. The award recognizes  innovative problem-solving, excellence in management, increasing citizen  participation, and reaching toward higher service levels.”

“This is local government of the future: partners, mentors,  facilitators.even cheerleaders to emerging community leaders,” said City  Manager Lawrence D. Hughes. “Our Council has cut $3 million, five  departments and the equivalent of 20 full-time positions to balance the  budget. We need residents who are themselves engaged in revitalizing their  own neighborhoods.”

Incoming Log Rolling Detected

So, I’m reading our paper this morning and I notice an article about a meeting with our Transportation Secretary, Mr. Connaughton.  You’ll remember him, Chair of the PWC BOC’s for awhile and then off to work for the Feds for awhile and now down to Richmond.  Dude gets around!  Good for him, hope he enjoys it!

I noticed this passage in particular:  “The former Prince William Board of County Supervisors chairman told a Prince William Chamber of Commerce lunch crowd at Old Hickory Golf Club on Wednesday that the state’s main goal is to plug a $400 to $500 million hole each year that could be devoted to capital projects but instead is funneled to pay for road upkeep.”

Uh-Oh.  One possible interpretation of that is that the state is preparing to shift more costs to the localities.  I’ve heard rumbings from VML that this was under active consideration.  Let’s hope not!  It would force a big tax increase on the local level….
