My Side of the Fence

The danger isn't going too far. It's that we don't go far enough.

Wherever I’ve been, I’m back…

I’ve been in Orlando the past few days so I was outta town for the big election (although we did vote absentee!).  There was a ton of money put into our local Senate district but the voters have returned Mr. Colgan to the state senate to continue his honerable service to our district.  I know it was a hard-fought race.  Mr. Miller was unopposed so he won (That happened to me last time and I suspect Jackson feels like me in that it’s a bit odd to be up for election and not have to work).  Both of our newly re-elected representatives will be getting the City’s legislative priority list shortly.  M&T and BPOL top the list…at least give us a revenue-neutral solution…..

For me, it was kind of a wierd race in that I wasn’t here on election day.  That’s the first time I’ve missed working the polls in some time.  Mayor and Council elections are next.  Let me know if you have any interest!

As for Orlando, I’m not really a fan.  There isn’t much in the way of bike or pedestrian infrastructure.  We stayed at the Marriot and they have 2 18 hole golf courses.  I was jogging the cart paths and the marshall fussed at me to stay out of the way of golf carts…  There isn’t anywhere else to jog!  Bollocks.  The other problem is that the flights into and out of Orlando are (not surprisingly) full of kids!  All I’ll say is that the state of parenting in America has declined since my daughter was that age.  There was a little boy that kicked his mother!  I treasure my daughter beyond all else in my existence but I would have worn her fanny out for such a stunt.  As my Mom said: spare the rod, spoil the child…:)

Lord, I’m glad to be back in VA.

On the City Legislative Priorities and the BPOL & M&T: Please do use that VaCO spreadsheet showing the dent to our fair City if removed and replaced with a 1% Sales & Use Tax. As per my norm, I see killing the prior two taxes without a dedicated funding stream replacement is just bad bad on the GA. And shifting it so the local government is the bad boy for adding a new tax, for which to balance the books we would have to go higher than 1%, will not set well with the residents.

    Welcome back!!!!
