The Ad-Hoc public safety committee had a meeting last night. I presented the proposed concept for the future structure of the Fire and Rescue services in our fair City at that meeting. There weren’t a whole lot of questions and I thought that some of the points that were raised had merit. I expect that we will be looking at some of the finer points of the proposal as we get down to the business of writing the ordinance. The committee refered the concept to the entire Council for consideration. That will be Monday night (as it currently stands). If the Council likes it, they may order staff to reduce the concept to an ordinance.

So, I’ve been spinning and biking for the past 18 months. I’m trying to work up to a 100 mile ride in the fall. Maybe a couple of other rides later this summer. I’ve never seen the Tour de France and it is an incredible sight. Just when I feel like I’m making some headway, I see those guys. The individual time trial was about 25 miles and was completed in about 50 minutes. That’s gettin’ down. Even when I’m pushing hard there isn’t a chance I could match that kind of speed. ‘Course, I’m dragging a shade more weight than they are and those guys do it for a living. The finale today in Paris was incredible although I think I would have a tough time riding in such a huge pack that was going that fast.
The other nice thing about being in the Tour is that the roads are closed for you. Riding a bike on the road is incredibly dangerous. People don’t signal, they don’t look, they don’t care and while bikes might have the right of way, they have the most to lose in a collision. I almost got run over on Saturday by a “Bimbo Bakery” truck. I was very glad to get onto the bike path that goes down the parkway. The County has great bike paths but I wish there was an safer way to get on the parkway than crossing Liberia.
MoreThere will be a meeting of the Ad-Hoc Fire Committee meeting next Tuesday evening at 5:30. Public Works. The proposed working model will be presented to the committee. After the presentation, the committee can refer the matter to the full Council or direct some other course of action.
MoreSo, my daughter volunteered to do a video for the City along the lines of tall grass enforcement. She and her friends created a club around the idea, set a budget, wrote scripts – really the whole deal was done indpendent of adults until the day of filming. They even raised the money by baking cookies and cupcakes and selling them. There is an article in the Journal Messenger about it here and their youtube video is here.
They would like to do one more video for the City about grafitti. The group has vowed to raise more money and buy better equipment but we’ll see what happens. I’ve had some folks email with offers to help out so we’ll see what shakes out.
Sarah and I are both very proud of the group!
MoreOne of our career firefighters, Zygimantas Zalys, died last Thursday from cancer. There was a fundraising event – a softball tournament about 3 weeks ago where I met “Z”, his wife and child. I didn’t know him for long but I am saddened to see him go. Please pray for Z and his family. Information on the service is here.
